This golden smoothie is almost as good as Charlie & The Chocolate Factory’s golden ticket!! You may not get a chocolate factory tour but you certainly will fill your gut with goodness if you make this anti inflammatory golden protein shake.
In ancient Ayurvedic Medicine, turmeric is a golden superstar. This yellow spice is known for its anti inflammatory purposes and is a great ingredient to add to your smoothie, tea (also see Golden Milk Turmeric Tea) or porridge. Here’s the goodness in this Golden Protein Shake Recipe:
- Bananas: Bananas are packed with potassium and manganese which can aid with prevention of muscle cramps. Some say that eating bananas could help lower blood pressure and reduce the risks of cancer and asthma. Also a good source of fibre and best eaten at room temperature.
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon isn’t just a tasty add on, it also has some powerful medicinal properties. Cinnamon is loaded with powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols. It also has anti inflammatory properties. Some say that cinnamon may improve some key risk factors for heart disease, including cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure.
- Turmeric:This ingredient is the star of this recipe…. Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Most studies used turmeric extracts that are standardised to include large amounts of curcumin. Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects. It neutralizes free radicals on its own but also stimulates your body’s own antioxidant enzymes.
- Protein Powder: Pretty much all my smoothies have a scoop of yummy protein power. Whether it’s a pre workout or post workout smoothie, protein will help me keep fuller longer, and will also help repair muscles. Definitely one not to miss!
- Black Pepper: You’re adding black pepper in your smoothie? Hell yeah!!!! It may sound funny but trust me, it’s a great addition to your smoothie and you won’t even taste it. A chemical in black pepper helps the body absorb the key substance in turmeric. So consuming black pepper and turmeric together helps you get alllll the goods!
Golden Protein Shake Recipe Ingredients
- 1 ripe banana (or frozen banana if preferred)
- 1 cup of milk of choice (or coconut water)
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- 1 scoop of your favourite protein powder (vanilla)
- A sprinkle of black pepper
Optional extras: add fresh ginger for some extra zing or try some yummy mango or pineapple or add honey if desired.
