Healthy Holidays: Tips For Staying Fit And Eating Healthy Whilst Travelling

We all need a break sometimes….. going away on a holiday is a great way to rest, recharge and rejuvenate the mind body and spirit. But what about staying fit and eating healthy whilst away? If you like have a healthy holiday and want to stay active healthy keep on reading!

1. Stay Hydrated

Starting your holiday off on the right foot is easy to achieve. As soon as you get on the plane make sure you stay hydrated. Be prepared and take your own water bottle (it may need to be an empty bottle as you may not be able to take water on certain flights). Make sure you take in some extra water as you are travelling because you can easily get dehydrated on the plane.

If possible take a small sample of your favourite face and hand moisturiser so that you can moisturise your skin whilst travelling.

2.Catch Up On Sleep

Holidays are to rest and recharge you so make sure you catch up on some extra sleep. Sleep is one of the most important things for optimal health and well-being.

So whilst on holidays why not include a nap on the beach, and that by the pool, or a nice long sleep in. Learn more about the importance of sleep for muscle recovery in this article.

3. Do a Yaba Daba Doo!

Don’t forget to pack your favourite set of runners so that you can go and explore the holiday destination by foot. Swap your car or public transport for walking (do a Fred Flintstone and use your feet as transportation). Exploring your holiday destination by foot means you will not only see more hidden spots that you would usually miss by going by car, but you will also incorporate daily exercise and you won’t even notice it whilst taking in all the new and exciting sights!

4. Get Creative Outdoors

Whilst on holidays you may not have access to a regular gym, or you simply may not feel like going to the gym. This doesn’t mean you have to get less active whilst on holidays. Get creative and think outside the square, use nature to get active and incorporate a walking sight seeing tour, an ocean or pool swim, or use outdoor fitness equipment that’s available in some spots.

If you are travelling to the beach destination you may simply want to include a yoga beach session for which you don’t need any equipment but an towel and comfy outfit. If you are taking your technology with you on your holiday and you would rather practice yoga in your hotel room check out these videos of easy to follow yoga routines you can do income for a hotel room.

5. BYO Breakfast

If you are staying in a self-contained apartment or hotel with a kitchenette it is very easy to bring your own breakfast with you. When I go on holidays the first thing I do is stop at the supermarket to get my usual breakfast ingredients, which is healthy oats with some nuts and seeds.

I usually take my own protein powder with me on my trip so that I don’t have to worry about finding the right one or missing out on my daily protein intake.

6. Pack Your Own Snacks

Set yourself up for success and pack some healthy snacks so that when you are out and about you won’t go hungry and opt for the unhealthy choices that maybe nearby.

Pack some healthy protein bars, some nuts, and fresh fruit if possible. The thing is, once you have bought these items and have them ready to go, you are setting yourself up for success and there will not be a need for unhealthy options. Although you may need to treat yourself to some holiday gelato 😉 It’s all about balance!

7. Choose Smart When Dining Out

When on holidays it is nice to go out for a special dinner and explore the local restaurants and eateries. If you are a foodie like I am and yet you still want to maintain a healthy diet whilst on holidays, you may just have to be smart about your daily nutritional intake.

Instead of finishing the day on a large dinner at a fancy restaurant, why not simply make lunch your larger meal of the day and then have a smaller lighter meal such as a soup, salad, or healthy seafood or steak with some sides for dinner.

Also, if you eat well during the day with your own breakfast and your own snacks, you won’t feel as bad about choosing your favourite meal at that restaurant. Once again, it’s all about balancing your intake and choosing healthier options.

8. Take Some ‘You-Time’

Besides catching up on some much needed sleep, take some time for yourself. Sleep is important and so is meditation and mindfulness. If possible, treat yourself to a massage or take 10, 15 or 20 minutes to yourself and do a guided meditation.
