Hey how are you today? I hope you are having a great day and are enjoying some of my posts on this blog. As you know, this blog follows my journey of healthy food, fitness, yoga, wellbeing and healthy living and also share some of my life experiences. In this post I’d like bring awareness to the fact that “You Are Good Enough” and letting go of unrelenting standards.
I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine about how we pressure ourselves into it “never being good enough” and “never being fit enough” and continually raising our standards and setting the bar too high. Having experienced this first handed, I thought you might like to know how you can deal with these thought patterns and let go of unrelenting standards.
You Are Good Enough
Too often we get caught up in pressure and caught up thinking it’s not good enough or not perfect enough. I myself set the bar very high, and being a perfectionist and high achiever, I often feel that I am not training hard enough, not performing well enough or not achieving enough in business.
I think standards are a challenge for many of us, not just for the perfectionists and driven ones. Whether in the gym or in business, I feel that many of us constantly strive to achieve extremely high standards that we set ourselves. Obsessions over over money, status, order, power, and recognition become our top priority at the expense of happiness, health, pleasure, and satisfying relationships.
The main take away I want to share with you is that we tend to lose touch with our natural selves when we become too focused on order, achievement, or status to attend to basic physical, emotional, and social needs. Things that make life worth living like love, family, friendship, creativity, and fun shouldn’t suffer.
Let Go Of Unrelenting Standards
When you feel you are becoming too obsessed, take a step away from your obsessive quest for perfection.Stopping to enjoy your success, celebrate how far you’ve come and enjoy the present moment. If you simply finish one thing and move to the next, what you just accomplished becomes meaningless. Let go of the pressure and relax and enjoy life. Stop pushing to get ahead, stop fighting to be the best at whatever you do: school, work, sports, hobbies, dating, etc. Here are a few steps to help you put things in perspective:
- Look at how far you’ve come – I do this by looking back at all my achievements and looking back at my training journal which hosts all my workout entries. You can also look back at your journal and review the past few months.
- Celebrate success – Now that you’ve realised how many good things you have achieved (whether you have simply done more steps than 3 months ago, have cut back on sugar, or have achieved a certain personal or business goal) it is time to celebrate. Pat yourself on the back and stand still for a moment. Breathe… be proud, be grateful and celebrate your successes.
- Put things into perspective – Sometimes all you need to do is put things into perspective. Simply look at someone else’s situation and realise that you’re doing a great job, realise that your blessed, lucky and be grateful for all that you have, all that you are and all that you’ve achieved. I often think that when I’m training in the gym it’s not good enough, then I think to myself, I’m in the gym and that’s all that matters. Remember that 90% of success is showing up.
- Turn failure into success – You simply can’t grow without failure. Failing isn’t a bad thing, it’s a stepping stone to take you to the next level. Turn this negative thinking pattern around and focus on the positive side. Ask yourself, what could I learn from this situation? What do I know works? what didn’t work? What will I do better next time?
- Meditate – Tune into your body and get quiet for a moment. Listen in, learn, reflect and be at peace with yourself, your achievements and your successes.
